Your Birth
The benefits of water in labour and birth have been recognised for centuries. Some of the best known benefits include providing pain relief with out the use of medication, speeding up the progression of labour and helping the mother to take control of her labour and birth.
Choosing the right birth pool.
Aquaborn will make a birth pool that is right for you.
- Eco Minded: The Mini pool is our most Eco friendly pool. It uses the least materials to make this pool and will take less of your hot water to fill it. It can be easily cleaned as it does not come with a Liner and Outer Cover and it can be reused or recycled as part of our birth pool recycling scheme. It's a little cheaper too.
- You are Tall: If you are more than 5'8" we suggest you use the Large Aquaborn Birth Pool to benefit more from reclining and achieve better buoyancy in the pool water.
- Concerned about the weight of a birth pool: If you are unsure about the structural integrity of your floor you should get advice from a structural engineer or surveyor. The Mini is 60kg less than the large Aquaborn birth pool.
- Freedom of movement: All of our birth pools have a minimum water depth of 52cm so you can move from one position to another with ease.
- You want to get two uses out of a personal birth pool. Choose the Large Aquaborn Personal birth pool or a Professional pool.
- You want to hire the pool out or use it more than twice: Choose the Professional Grade Aquaborn Birth Pool for use up to 20 times.
How to use your pool / birth positions
Aquaborn birth pools are ergonomically designed to promote better handling and positioning for midwives and gives greater choice for mothers to adopt different positions in labour and birth.
The Aquaborn Pools uses I-beams to significantly reduce the movement of air in the lower chamber. This creates a strong stable base on which the client can sit and manoeuvre themselves into the pool. The upper ring can be quickly deflated to gain quick and easy access into the pool without compromising the containment of water.
The increased pool wall height has two main functions:
- It allows a greater internal depth of water to improve buoyancy; therefore it assists the mother in easily changing position.
- The pool wall height supports the midwives trunk, lowering the risk of lower back injury amongst midwives who assist in water birth. (See midwives professional section, ergonomics and handling)
Getting in & out of the pool: The sit & swing method
- Sit on the side of the pool holding a top chamber handle.
- Step one leg at a time over the side of the pool wall, so that the mother is sitting with her feet in the pool water.
- Gently lower into the pool water.
-
If there is difficulty in stepping a leg over the pool wall, the top chamber can be temporarily partially deflated, so that the mother sits on the lower chamber. Perform the 'Sit and Swing' with the assistance of one other person.
NB. Beware of spills. If you feel the water level is too high with you or you and your partner in the pool; you should remove some water with a clean sterile bucket. - The handles on the Aquaborn birth pool are placed in such a way that the pool can be used length ways and width ways. Reclining, sitting, forward leaning, squatting and bracing positions are all easily achieve in the Aquaborn birth pool.
- Both sets of upper handles are placed so that the mother uses the width of the pool and the midwife can get closer to her without twisting or needing to excessively reach forward.
